Crazy wood chopper
Thursday, July 9th, 2009I came across this the other day. It is mesmerizing to watch this thing in action. I want one. I promise to only use it for responsible tree harvesting.

Holy crap. I feel like I need a life vest to watch this.
I want this planter. I had an interview on Tuesday at an academic institution. We shall see. And now I must get back to making Christmas presents.

Beautiful and strange animation.

You may have already seen/heard this, but it is still neat.
Ever since I was little, whenever someone in my family farts loudly, they say it was a “barking spider”. Little did I know, there really is a barking spider, Selenocosmia crassipes. And all this time I just thought my family was crazy.
Today Craig hiked up Mount Washington. Being the nerds that we are, he called me from the top to tell me to look at the webcam on the observatory. So there he is in the middle. His uncle is on the right. And on the left is either his father or some random person. It’s hard to tell from the grainy picture. The random person doesn’t have hiking poles like Craig’s dad would have. Craig didn’t say his dad was going, but if he was a complete stranger, why would he be standing so close to them? I guess there is an “x” to show you where to stand, but I don’t like to get that close to people I don’t know. I like my bubble of personal space.

Since I haven’t been working, I’ve been reading a lot. I need something to keep me from going insane while I try and adjust to my new meds and try to be less worried about things (like insurance, not having a job, feeling sick).
Water Cooler Diaries was a fascinating read. Basically, for one day (March 27, 2007), women across the United States kept a diary of their workday. It was a peek into other people’s lives that I could not put down. Some of the women were pretty interesting (the mine geologist, the “paint tester…for now”) and others were kind of annoying (the stay-at-home mom who takes zoloft, drinks wine and coffee, and breastfeeds). It was like people-watching in a readable format. More info here.
I heart science.
